PISD Career and Technical Education (CTE)
Endorsements in Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources

 

The Hendrickson Agriculture Science Department invites you to explore the exciting and diverse world of Agricultural Science.  HHS offers three unique pathways and fourteen different courses for students to develop leadership and employability skills in this industry. 

 

Plant Systems Pathway

  • Principles of Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources (9th – 12th Grade)
    • Students will develop skills related to plant and animal systems, food production, mechanical systems, entrepreneurship, leadership and environmental sciences.
  • Horticultural Science (10th -12th Grade)
    • Students enrolled in Horticulture will develop skills in green house and nursery production, propagation methods, plant identification and entrepreneurship. Students will operate a greenhouse and manage a plant sale.
  • Landscape Design (10th -12th Grade)
    • This course prepares students for careers in landscaping and sports turf settings. Students are involved with various projects such as water gardens, irrigation and landscape installation.
  • Practicum of Floral Design**(11th or 12th Grade)
    • Students will explore advanced and contemporary design styles as well as entrepreneurship opportunities in the floral industry. Students will have the opportunity to gain an industry certification from the Texas State Floral Association.  **Students must complete Principles and Elements of Floral Design as a pre-requisite for this class.

    Agricultural Power Systems Pathway

  • Principles of Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources (see above description)(9th – 12th Grade)
  • Agriculture Mechanics and Metal Technologies(10th – 12th Grade)
    • Students will develop skills in safety, tool operations, electrical wiring, plumbing, carpentry, fencing, concrete and metal working techniques of welding and metal fabrication.
  • Ag Facilities Design and Fabrication**(11th or 12th Grade)
    • Ag Facilities Design and Fabrication is lab intensive with a concentration on welding as well as agriculture structures and power systems.  ** Pre-Requisite: Ag Mechanics & Metal Technologies
  • Agricultural Power (2016-2017)
    • This course is designed to develop an understanding of power and control systems as related to energy sources, small and large power systems, and agricultural machinery.

    Animal Systems Pathway

  • Principles of Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources (see above description) (9th – 12th Grade)
  • Small Animal Management (10th -12th Grade)
    • Overview of the small animal industry, including pet and exotic animals. Topics include species, breeds, animal health, reproduction, genetics, facilities, equipment and marketing.
  • Large Animal Management (10th -12th Grade)
    • Students will develop knowledge and skills pertaining to the selection, nutrition, reproduction, health and management of horses, cattle, sheep, goats, swine and other species.
  • Wildlife, Fisheries & Ecology Management (10th -12th Grade)
    • This course examines the importance of wildlife, outdoor recreation and ecological concepts with an emphasis on wildlife species identification and management of natural resources. Note: Hunter Safety Certification available
  • Veterinary Medical Applications (2015-2016)**  (11th or 12th Grade)
    • Introduces students to a career in Veterinary Science as the basic concepts and skills to the veterinary industry. Such skills include safety and sanitation, terminology, hospital management and proper handling and restraining techniques. **Pre-requisite: Small and/or Large Animal Management

      4th Science Credit Options:

  • Advanced Animal Science (12th Grade)
    • Students will spend at least 40% of instructional time conducting field and laboratory investigations using safe and environmentally appropriate and ethical practices within their research and studies of animals.
  • Advanced Plant & Soil Science (12th Grade)
    • Provides students with investigations, laboratory and field experiences to develop an understanding of current plant and soil science.

      Fine Arts Credit Option:

  • Principles & Elements of Floral Design (10th – 12th Grade)
    • Students will apply skills in floral design by making hands on projects such as homecoming mums and floral arrangements.  They will learn planning techniques for weddings and other major events.  Students will have the opportunity to gain an industry certification from the Texas State Floral Association.
